See “About This Report.”Minnesota CharitableGiving OverviewTotal Giving by Individuals Held SteadyThe majority of charitable giving in Minnesota – 76 percentof all dollars given – is done by individuals (see Table 1and Figure A). Individual giving in Minnesota held steady at$4.19 billion in 2007, in line with 2006 levels.In 2007 in Minnesota, 906,845 individuals claimed charita-ble contributions on their tax returns, and the averagecontribution per itemized tax return was $3,785. The averagesize of contributions by residents of Minnesota continuedto remain below the national average of $4,623.3 Historically,more Minnesota residents, including those with lowercharitable giving levels, have itemized their charitable con-tributions than the national average.Total Giving by Grantmakers GrewGrantmakers contributed 23 percent of total charitable givingin Minnesota in 2007. Foundation and corporate giving inMinnesota totaled $1.32 billion, an increase of 10.1 percent,from $1.20 billion in 2006 (see Table 1).As in previous years, most of Minnesota’s total grant dollarspaid in 2007 came from a relatively small number of grant-makers. The total number ofgrantmakers in the state ticked up slightly – 2.2 percent –from 2006 (see Figure B).Although corporate foundations and giving programs makeup a small percentage of Minnesota grantmakers, historicallythey have given a large share of grant dollars. In 2007they accounted for 9 percent of the grantmakers and gave43 percent of all grant dollars. Private foundations, themajority of grantmakers in the state, gave 43 percent of grantdollars. As the smallest portion of the state’s grantmakers,community/public foundations accounted for 14 percent oftotal grant dollars paid (see Figure B and Figure C). Thehuman services, environment/animals, and internationalaffairs subject areas experienced the fastest rate of growth in2007 – all increased between 17 and 18 percent from 2006.The arts, culture and humanities, and health areas experi-enced the slowest rates of growth, at just 3 percent each.Giving Trends by theTop 100 GrantmakersEducation, Human Services Lead Subject AreasConsistent with previous years, education, human services,and public affairs/society benefit received the largest sharesof Minnesota’s grant dollars in 2007, at 27 percent, 24 per-cent and 15 percent, respectively (see Figure D). These four areas also received their largestshares of grant dollars from private foundations in 2006.Corporate grantmakers provided the largest shares of grantdollars given to arts, culture and humanities (55 percent),education (54 percent) and public affairs/society benefit (48percent), in line with 2006 trends. Notably, corporate grant-makers’ share of giving to international affairs increasedby 9 percentage points, to 13 percent in 2007, from 4 percentin 2006.Continuing a long-term trend, community/public foundationsgave the largest share of grant dollars to religion (48 percent).Geographies Served SplitBetween Minnesota and BeyondThe share of giving to organizations serving Minnesota was55 percent in 2007, in line with 2006 levels. Just under$500 million was given to organizations serving Minnesotain 2007: 32 percent went to the Twin Cities metro area,12 percent went to Greater Minnesota, and 11 percent wentto Minnesota statewide (see Figure E). Among all geographicareas, giving to Greater Minnesota grew fastest, increasing18 percent in 2007 compared to 2006.The share of giving to organizations serving the nationdecreased to 12 percent in 2007, from 14 percent in 2006.Children and Youth Top Beneficiary GroupsOnly 53 percent of grants could be coded to a specific bene-ficiary group. Givingfor capital support grew in 2007, to $122.3 million, from$89.6 million in 2006 (see Figure F).6About This ReportEach year, the Minnesota Council on Foundationsproduces Giving in Minnesota, the most comprehensiveanalysis of charitable giving in the state. The 2009edition features information on overall giving in 2007,which MCF defines as the fiscal year of any Minnesotafoundation or corporate giving program that endsbetween June 1, 2007, and May 31, 2008. This is themost recent time period for which complete data areavailable. This summary provides highlights from the fullreport, which can be viewed online at www.mcf.org/gim.The complete report includes information about overallgiving by foundations, corporations and individuals inMinnesota, along with detailed grantmaking trends by asample of 100 of the state’s largest grantmakers basedon grants paid. The sample is made up of 50 privatefoundations, 34 corporate foundations and givingprograms, and 16 community/public foundations.Although they represent just 7 percent of all grantmakersin Minnesota, these 100 accounted for approximately 82percent of all grant dollars paid in the state.
