A reactor was constructed in plane glass withsquare section of 20 cm with useful volume of four liters. The COD of the synthetic waste water used inthese experiments is around 1,600 mg/L. It was possible to reduce 71% to 97% of COD with flow rateof 1040 mg/L and 420 mg/L respectively. The degradation kinetics of the aromatic compounds weredetermined, when supplied to the microbial populations both individually and as mixtures.A biofilm was established on a packed-bed GAC column reactor. Inoculum for the column was suppliedfrom the batch grown chlorophenol degrading bacterial consortia, using a closed recirculation system.The formation of the biofilm at different depths along the length of the column was monitored byConfocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The columnwas supplied with a continuous flow of chorophenol contaminated water when microscopy studiesdemonstrated that a suitable biofilm had been established. Chorophenol disappearance and chlorideliberation were monitored.
