The degradation kinetics of the aromaticcompounds were determined, when supplied to the microbialpopulations both individually and as mixtures.A biofilm was established on a packed-bed granular activatedcarbon (GAC) column reactor. Inoculum for the column wassupplied from the batch grown chlorophenol degradingbacterial consortia, using a closed recirculation system. Theformation of the biofilm at different depths along the lengthof the column was monitored by Confocal Laser ScanningMicroscopy (CLSM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM). The column was supplied with a continuous flow ofchorophenol contaminated water when microscopy studiesdemonstrated that a suitable biofilm had been established.Chorophenol disappearance and chloride liberation weremonitored. The effect of chlorophenol adsorption to GACboth prior to and after inoculation and the effect of differentsupplied chlorophenol concentrations, on the development ofbiofilm communities was also investigated.29 de Novembro a I de Dezembro de 1997	 34Tomar
