The largesurplus of glycerol in the market is expected to expand furtherwith the spread of biodiesel plants using oilseeds. Thusglycerol price will probably decrease and therefore itsbiological conversion to a more demanded chemical such as1,3- propanediol could help to reduce glycerol surpluses on themarket. 1,3- propanediol is a versatile degradable intermediatecompound for the synthesis of heterocycles and a monomer forthe production of polymers such as polyesters andpolyurethanes.It has been shown that some clostridial species can convertglycerol to 1,3- propanediol with an appreciable yield. Due toits safety record , Clostridium butyricum is the preferred strainfor potential industrial use.Batch fermentations with and without pH regulation werecarried out with Clostridium butyrictun VPI 3266 , usingdifferent concentrations of " industrial " glycerol ( 65 %glycerol ) from a biodiesel production process. Bacteria wereable to grow in 50 g/1 of "industrial glycerol " and to produce0.48 g 1,3 propanediol / g glycerol consumed.29 de Novembro a I de Dezembro de 1997	 108Tomar
