This brief article was written to draw readers attention to an ongoing piece of work carried out by two students of the Viseu School of Education (ESEV) in collaboration with their English teacher, John McKenny. An online Internet dictionary of English loan words in Portuguese has been created and it is to be hoped that with readers' co-operation it can be continually enriched and updated. This dictionary of English loan words in present-day Portuguese started as a class project and has had input from three different classes of students of Língua Inglesa II. It grew out of brainstorming and the collective intuitions of trainee teachers of Portuguese and English at the Viseu School of Education. The inchoate nature of the dictionary is meant as a challenge to users of the Portuguese language. We hope to develop a lexical database of English loan words in Portuguese which is continually updated with input from our own research and from informants in the Portuguese-speaking world.   Some readers will be aware of the work led by James Murray in the latter half of the 19th century and the early decades of this century in which a monumental dictionary of the English language was Queiroz, A.; Rodrigues, J. & McKenny, J. This dictionary, known as The Oxford English Dictionary (OED), had almost 500,000 word entries and was made possible by the new 'technology' of the postal system. Thousands of volunteers throughout the English-speaking world posted citation slips to Murray in Oxford giving occurrences of words in their context in each century of the history of the English language. Murray and his co-workers built up an incredible record of the evolution of the meanings of English words. We talk at length about Murray because he and his fellow workers are an inspiration to us. Of course our project is a much humbler one of describing part of the story of the contact between the Portuguese and the English language. A corollary to our work would be an investigation of the nearly 1,000 Portuguese loan words in English (e.g. tank, elephant, banana).   We do not wish to promote the English over the Portuguese language. We merely wish to record, with the help of contributors, the facts as to what is presently occurring in Portuguese usage in relation to English loan words. We see ourselves as being descriptive and not prescriptive. We would hope eventually to make our dictionary citation-based with workers and collaborators watching the popular and quality press, literature, scientific journals, television and radio and inputting interesting examples.  What is a loan word ?  The linguistic term "loan word" has its funny side because invariably the words "loaned " by one language to another are never returned. Such borrowings may be to fill a lexical gap which appears as a result of scientific or technological progress or it may be to demarcate a specialized object or function in a trade or profession. On other occasions it can seem more arbitrary as when Portuguese speakers prefer to say "Estou a trabalhar em part-time " instead of "Estou a trabalhar a tempo parcial" or they speak of "palavra-passe" instead of the native term "senha". This latter creation , "palavra-passe" is a calque or loan translation (i.e. a word by word and literal translation into the target language of a compound source language word or phrase) and is an intermediate solution to filling the lexical gap. Other users of Portuguese say password, which is a straight loan. Part-time was a concept which had not previously been found necessary in Portuguese and when another world-view or weltanschaung (namely the English-speaking world) evolved the concept or division of time referred to by the compound part-time, users of Portuguese decided to import the idea and the term. Whatever the motivation for such borrowings, it seems true that this phenomenon is universal and in some cases the loan words come to outnumber the native lexis of a language. Borrowing might be seen as evidence of the vigour of a language and those academicians who lament the contamination of the Queiroz, A.; Rodrigues, J. & McKenny, J. (1999). Millenium, 15    mother tongue with loan words might be accused of King Canute-like obscurantism in trying to turn back the linguistic tide. The use of calques or loan translations is an intermediate solution using L1(target language) lexical items to translate the meaning of an L2 (source language) composite phrase.  We would welcome suggestions, additions, improvements, refinements, corrections, criticisms as well as any articles or bibliographies from Portuguese speakers or scholars throughout the world.  We would appreciate any further information you might wish to send us e.g. if you think that a loan word is a regional usage. Perhaps we can have regional labels e.g. Moz. for Mozambique or Brz. for Brazil. If you notice any change in pronunciation between source and target language, for example, in terms of word stress or assimilation to the phonology of Continental or Brazilian Portuguese, we would like to know about it. Is the loan word "frozen" or does it take any grammatical inflections?. We welcome all comments and contributions you might wish to send us. A abordagem usada na construção do dicionário  Com este trabalho pretendemos recolher vocábulos e expressões inglesas utilizadas em português. As fontes que virão a ser usadas serão a imprensa, com destaque para os jornais, a televisão e a rádio, assim como revistas científicas que contenham uma abordagem à área do nosso projecto, sem esquecermos a própria internet. Dada a natureza descritiva, e não prescritiva, do nosso trabalho, as nossas 'leituras', por enquanto, são apenas um ponto de partida. Esperamos, a breve trecho, caminhar no sentido do uso de vocábulos contextualizados em citações, tal como no COBUILD English Dictionary. Tentaremos seguir o exemplo de James Murray, que convidou um ‘exército’ de leitores a enviarem-lhe citações com a respectiva fonte indicada. Para que algo de semelhante suceda com este trabalho, agradecemos a colaboração de todos/as os/as cibernautas lusófonos/as que visitem esta página. Até ao momento, a fonte utilizada é a vivência das pessoas que efectuam a recolha. Num futuro próximo procuraremos seguir um critério de observação de um mesmo vocábulo em duas fontes diferentes, particularmente da imprensa. Outro aspecto que convém salientar, e que se encontra igualmente ligado à metodologia usada, é o que se refere às abreviaturas utilizadas. Com o evoluir do projecto, e com a prestimosa colaboração de todos os amigos deste dicionário, encontraremos, todos juntos, soluções mais adequadas a cada uma das situações que necessitem de alterações.  Poder-se-ão levantar questões relativamente à existência de equivalentes em português para as expressões inglesas que são usadas, mas acreditamos que a especificidade de determinados contextos conduz à utilização do vocábulo inglês. Este fenómeno é verificável, por exemplo, nas novas ciências, como é o caso da informática. As pessoas directamente envolvidas neste projecto, sendo estudiosos da língua inglesa, não são, porém, "imperialistas", no sentido de impor a língua inglesa à língua portuguesa, nem tão pouco puristas na defesa da língua portuguesa porque esta tem meios próprios de defesa, sendo uma das línguas mais faladas do mundo. Não estão em causa juízos de valor, mas sim a constatação de um aumento significativo de palavras inglesas na língua portuguesa.  A concepção deste Dicionário de termos ingleses usados em português deve-se ao Dr. John Anthony McKenny, docente da Escola Superior de Educação de Viseu. Para a concretização deste trabalho, o Dr. McKenny contou com a colaboração dos seus alunos nos anos de 1996, 1997 e 1998, estando, no entanto, mais envolvidos os alunos do 3º ano (1998/99) do curso de Professores do 2º Ciclo do Ensino Básico na variante Português/Inglês. Reiteramos o convite de colaboração a todos/as cibernautas.  Notas técnicas No limiar de um novo milénio e com o avanço das novas tecnologias que teve lugar nos últimos anos deste século, era importante que ao fazermos a recolha dos termos ingleses usados no português nos propuséssemos divulgá-los de uma forma o mais abrangente possível, levando em linha de conta precisamente as tecnologias da informação à nossa disposição. Assim sendo, houve que assumir dois objectivos prioritários. Em primeiro lugar, como divulgar, pesando aqui a ideia que esta divulgação deveria ser o mais ampla possível, face à crescente globalização. Em segundo lugar, como conseguir manter este dicionário sempre actualizado, sabendo nós que no comum formato, papel, ele ficaria desactualizado logo no dia que fosse publicado, em virtude do constante e vertiginoso aumento que o uso de termos ingleses na nossa língua tem conhecido.
