It isaphidͲtransmitted inanonͲpersistent mode. It has been found infecting openͲfield pepperͲcrops with variableincidences inArgentina, France, Italy,Morocco,Bulgaria, Slovenia and Spain, frequentlyinducingmild mosaic on leaves, andmosaic, discolouring and distortion on fruits. Nogenetic resistance to BBWVͲ1 has been described on pepper. In order to screen forpotential sources of resistance on pepper, and given that experimental mechanicalͲtransmission of BBWVͲ1 often produces irregular responses on inoculated plants, weanalyzedtheeffectofinoculationconditionsonthereactionsofpepper‘YoloWonder’and‘Doux des Landes’ and other indicator species to a Spanish isolate of BBWVͲ1 (Ben).Differentcombinationsofgrowthtemperature, light intensity,stageofpepperplants,pHand source of inoculumwere assayed in climatic chamber, and some of them also ingreenhouse. Optimal conditions for inoculation of BBWVͲ1 on pepper were found onclimaticchamber:plantswith2Ͳ6trueleaves,grownat25ºCand80PAR(PhotosyntheticActive Radiation, μmol CO2mͲ2 sͲ1). Inoculum propagated on pepperwas suitable forscreening Capsicummaterial. However, Physalis floridana, Petunia hybrida and OcimunbasilicumwerebetterforbiologicalcharacterizationofBBWVͲ1isolatesonindicatorhosts.FourteenaccessionsofCapsicumspp.wereevaluatedbymechanical inoculationwiththeisolate Ben once or twice in simultaneous experiments in climatic chamber and ingreenhouse.All plants of every accessionwere found susceptible toBBWVͲ1 in climatechamberexperiments.However, someplantsof accessions ‘SerranoCriollodeMorelosͲ334’and‘Perennial’didnotshowevidenceofvirusinfectioningreenhouseexperiments.Inordertoclarifythisbehaviour,someoftheseplantswereselfͲpollinated,andseven‘Perennial’andsix‘SCMͲ334’progenieswereinoculated(10plants/progeny)twicein greenhouse conditions. Again, some symptomless plants of both cultivars wereobserved,whichwereselfͲpollinated.Thirtyprogeniesof ‘Perennial’and fiveofSCMͲ334were inoculated (15plants/progeny) in climatic chamber (25 ºC and 80PAR).Allplantsshowedviralsymptoms,whichappeared5Ͳ6daysafterinoculation,beingmorevisibleonSCMͲ34plants.We concluded that testedmaterialwasnot resistant.However, it couldexistsometoleranceorothermechanismtoexplainthedifferentbehaviouringreenhouseconditionsbetweenbothcultivarsandthesusteptibleones.
