Special Section on Resilience of Engineering SystemsOur modern life has grown to depend on many and nearly ubiq-uitous large complex engineering systems, such as tunnels, gas/oilpipelines, geotechnical infrastructures, etc. All of these are thebackbones of our modern society; therefore, complex real-worldsystems should not only be reliable, but also have high resilientcapacity. Resilience is generally recognized as the ability of a crit-ical infrastructure to recover from a disruptive event, and there isno doubt that we are experiencing a “resilience renaissance,” withattempts to embed system resilience almost everywhere for thewell-being of our community. Therefore, analyzing and modelingthe resilience of complex systems and networks have recentlyreceived significant interest from academia and industry. It hasbeen recognized that such comprehensive development requiresinnovative theories, approaches, and technologies for resilientdesign and risk reduction for complex systems and networks.Such developments will facilitate further robust economic growththrough resilient and efficient high-performance engineering sys-tems. Additionally, developments should target resilient and cost-effective solutions to eliminate or reduce these vulnerabilities bymaking our complex systems and networks resilient at a minimumlevel of risk proneness. The goal is not to preserve existing sys-tems, but to preserve and even enhance functions of criticalhigh-technology systems, where failure consequences can be par-ticularly severe. While qualitative assessment approaches are use-ful to understand how bad things are, quantitative assessmentmeasures provide numerical estimation of system performance,time, and cost that are more meaningful to stakeholders.This Special Section of the ASCE-ASME Journal of Risk andUncertainty in Engineering System: Part B is dedicated to resil-ience of engineering systems. It consists of six papers providingsnapshots of selected recent developments in the field. The Spe-cial Section covers theories and approaches that address resilienceof engineering systems from different angles. Included aredevelopments for assessing the seismic resilience of power gridsystems, for evaluating the magnitude and spatial extend of dis-ruptions across interdependent national infrastructure networks,for assessing the implication of track location by example of theJoplin Tornado, for resilience decision-making for complex sys-tems, for analyzing reliability strategies of phased mission sys-tems, and for modeling uncertain and dynamic interdependenciesof infrastructure systems.The Guest Editors wish to thank all the authors of this specialsection for contributing high quality papers. We would like tothank the referees who have critically evaluated the papers withinthe short stipulated time. Moreover, we sincerely thank theEditor-in-Chief’s inspiring leadership.
