Italo Calvino, the fa-mous Italian writer, wrote that literature classics havealways something new to say (Calvino 2013), this iswhy we are still studying them. Remarkable build-ings pertaining to built heritage can be compared tothe literature classics (Di Mascio 2015); they continueto inspire people's projects and lives also after cen-turies. Built heritage is a key element in deﬁning andunderstanding local identity. It reﬂects not only theimportance of tangible objects but also the intangi-ble image of a society and its attitude towards pro-tecting the past (Kepczynska-Walczak and Walczak,2013). In recent years, constructions (buildings,mon-uments) pertaining to cultural heritage are increas-ingly understood, documented, managed, analysedand disseminated through the application of severaldigital technologies; this trend has created one ofthe main research areas in architecture, called Digi-tal Heritage. Digital technologies openup alternativeand new possibilities in the study of tangible and in-tangible features of built heritage. They don't substi-tute traditional methods and tools but complementand enrich them; for example, freehand analyticalsketches can represent an invaluable support during3D digital reconstructions because they allow to in-vestigate and clarify complex or missing parts. Thehuge variety of constructions pertaining to culturalheritage is studied using a likewisewide range of dig-ital technologies and methods such as: laser scan-ning, CAAD, 3D modellers, game engines, BIM andSemantic Web technologies. The use of these digi-tal technologies is always supportedby the collectionand analysis of historical information and by theoret-Workshops - Volume 1 - eCAADe 34 | 59ical andmethodological frameworks, inﬂuenced by alarge number of architectural theories and concepts.One of the main points that characterizes built her-itage compared to most of the contemporary con-structions is the strong connection with a speciﬁcphysical and cultural context. For this reason, un-like most of the traditional workshops on this topic,the main idea that underlies this workshop proposalis linked with a contextualized practical exercise inOulu, Finland. Every tangible and intangible featureof a heritage construction can be documented andanalysed in a multitude of ways using several con-cepts, theories and digital tools. The participants willbe asked to creatively use their diverse knowledgeand experiences in the local context to deal with spe-ciﬁc buildings' features. The workshop could alsoproduce a project for the local historic heritage com-munity. This event is thought to represent the ﬁrstof a series of future contextualized digital heritageworkshops and hence, the name Oulu interchange-able with the name of any other city or place.GOALS ANDOUTCOMESThe workshop will represent a place to share con-structive and polyvalent discussions on digital her-itage; participation in a previous digital heritage pro-ject/research is mandatory.This workshop aims tocreate a space to allow scholars to discuss, share andapply their knowledge in a digital heritage exercisecontextualized in Oulu. Moreover, this event alsoaims to build a community of scholars interested indigital heritage, with a speciﬁc focus on architecture.With the support of the organizing committee, twodiﬀerent built heritage in Oulu (pertaining to diversebuilding typologies) will be selected as case studiesfor the exercise. Participantswill be asked to use theirexpertise to speculate how to document, manage,analyse or disseminate any speciﬁc feature of the se-lected constructions. In this way, they will have theopportunity to share their diﬀerent point of viewsand approaches on the same built heritage and learnfrom each other. As far as we are aware, this eventmay represent the ﬁrst attempt to connect a digitalheritage workshop to a local context in a multidisci-plinary way.To summarize, we seek to:• Create a space to allow scholars to discuss,share and apply their knowledge on casestudies located in Oulu;• Build a community of scholars interested indigital heritage;• Plan future activities on digital heritage.A poster will be prepared to show to the conferenceattendees the diﬀerent methodologies and toolselaborated by the workshop participants for eachcase study. Concepts andmethodologies elaboratedduring the workshop will be presented in a confer-ence paper or journal article.WORKSHOP PLANThe workshop will provide a balance of on-site vis-its, plenary sessions, breakout discussions and prac-tical exercise activities. The event will be split in twodays. During the ﬁrst day, the selected constructionspertaining to Oulu's built heritage will be presentedwith the support of amember of the local organizingcommittee. After the presentations, there will be on-site visits to have a direct experience of the buildingand collect information (such as notes, sketches, pic-tures, videos) useful for the exercise. During the after-noon and the morning of the day after, participantswill work in groups of two or three to elaborate theirspeculations using their speciﬁc knowledge and ap-proaches. During the rest of the day, participants willpresent their ideas and receive feedback and ques-tions fromtheother scholars. Aﬁnal discussion ledbythe workshop organizers will attempt to synthesizethe key points touched during the event and to iden-tify themes and issues for future research and collab-oration, and to develop concrete actions to progressfuturework in this area (e.g. developingnetworks, fu-ture workshops). He has undertaken researchprojects on digital technologies applied in the com-prehension, analysis and documentation of tangibleand intangible characteristics of cultural heritage, in:Belgium, England, Italy, Scotland and United States.The research include a wide variety of buildings fromvernacular architecture to masterpieces such as theGlasgow School of Art designed by C.R. Mackintosh.He participated and published at various interna-tional conferences in Europe, Middle and Far East; atthe Chinese University of Hong Kong (2010), he re-ceived the Young CAADRIA Award.Anetta Kepczynska-Walczak, Associate Profes-sor and Head of Department of Digital Technologiesin Architecture and Urban Planning at Lodz Univer-sity of Technology, Poland. M.Sc. in Architecture;Pg.Dip. in Computer Aided BuildingDesign and Ph.D.at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, UK; 2014habilitation. She will be hosting the 2018 eCAADe con-ference.NicholasWebb is a PhD, aqualiﬁed architect andlecturer at the Liverpool School of Architecture. He isresearching the application of contemporary digitaltechniques as a method of analysing historic worksof architecture, providing new and enhanced infor-mation that would not have been possible in a pre-digital era.
