Several weeks ago, the Journal of the American Medical Assoc nounced the forthcoming first meeting of the new AMA Dep, Medicine and Religion. The aims of .the department, formed jus summer, included among other things greater understanding o: teachings of different faiths (dietary and fasting laws, Extren, etc.), augmentation of medical , nursing, and theological trainin• tion with medical mission efforts, treatment of problems of k nesses, and some aspects of the topics mentioned above. ACRE QUARTERLY Resort to extraordinary means of treating the patient with advanced cancer has been condemned by so­cial workers, philosophers, theologi­ans, economists, and humanitarians. The individual physician, however, is committed to active treatment of disease and "must carry on until the issue is taken out of his hands." The rationale for such a philosophy is as follows: (1.) treatable symptoms may incorrectly be ascribed to ma­lignancy; (2.) appropriate treatment may produce remarkable results; (3.) most patients are eager to live and will insist on vigorous and con­tinuous therapeutic efforts, and ( 4.) therapeutic defeatism is a major barrier to advances in medical knowledge. Since coincidence of the nephrotic syndrome and pregnancy is rare, opinions have varied concerning the management of this complication. On the one hand, therapeutic abor­tion has been advocated in order t o  prevent further renal damage. On the other hand, the availability of steroid therapy has permitted a more conservative approach. Anotherexplanation is seen in the ,esults ofthe following surveys. 01,e survey showed that three out of every tenCatholic married couples resorted to condemned practices in family plan­ning. In another, 69 per cent of the Catholic women interviewC'd on the question of the availability of ma­terial on birth control said that ,t should be made available. Eighteenpercent of a troupe of 75 Catholic women in a non-Catholic college would consider use of contracep­tives, and only 51 per cent of anoth­er group of Catholics mterviewed on the topic of artificial or mecham­cal methods of birth control were Ifclear agreement with the Church s stand. Recent advances in our knowledge of the reproduction function and body chemistry which are relevantto the "regulation of births" havemade this one of the key moralproblems of our age. Some brief, nontechnical evaluations of various 38 Of 475 Catholic respondents or�of about 2,400 interviews WI urban married women on the use of contraceptives, 43 per cent of this Catholic sampling admitted to fahm­ily planning practices other t an LINACRE QUARTERLY safe period, plain douche, or with­drawal. Although it may be true that many of the so-called Catholics in these surveys would be consid­ered either dormant or marginal Catholics, we do see a serious secu­laristic trend in the above facts brought about possibly by the socio­economic pressures of the times and a notable weakness in the religious training and spirit in the Catholic home. We submit that a satisfactory solution to the problem has not yetbeen sufficiently thought out. Onemight ask whether the need for such thinking is generally accepted. -J.A.M. This risk factor makes spacings longer than 18 months between births unlikely, on LINACRE QUARTERLY statistical grounds alone, at a coital frequency of 3 to 4. However; Latz and Reiner's · rhythm patients (preg­nancy rate 30 coital frequency 4 to 5) were able to reduce their risk factor to Y2 per cent per coitus by a judi­cious use of the calendar method. This partial success of rhythm in reducing pregnancy rates is of little reassurance to the individual mother who is faced, here and now, with the need of avoid­ing pregnancy during the current and future cycles. Pope Paul VI has promised a re­examination of the controversial ano­vulant "pill." In the interim, he has reaffirmed the moral norms of Pius XII, which condemn a directly contra­c eptive, but permit a therapeutic, use of the pill. Luteal phase therapy provides a non-contraceptive use of anovulants that is gaining favor among doctors in t�e treatment of Roman Catholic pa­tients, by regularizing the menstrual cycle for both positive and negative files of rhythm. Roman Catholic moral norms also permit the utilization of natural tern-. porary sterility in men.
