The dis-parity between them and facultymembers was pronounced then, butnowhere to the extent it is today. The “Developing the Athlete forAcademic Excellence” article in themost recent Conversations does verylittle to address the persistent prob-lem; indeed, it exacerbates the issue.Those who would applaud the uni-versity for academically shelteringthe athletes are matched by thosewho despair that equally hardwork-ing non-athletes who work fulltimewhile attending Marquette seeminglydon’t obtain the same kind of con-centrated assistance.Nonetheless, the main issue iscompensation for coaches andwrong-doing mainly at NCAA Div. 1campuses. While the current flashpoint may be the University ofMiami and what Donna Shalala doesin response to the multiple allega-tions of gross wrong-doing, it does-n’t take much to compare Miami’sproblems with Marquette’s situation.Coaches’ compensation out of sortswith faculty norms  and allegationsof coddling athletes from civil/crimi-nal penalties is not that distant fromMiami’s headaches. As you and yourNational Seminar of Jesuit HigherEducation colleagues look to futureseminars, I hope you devote at leastsome attention to this topic and findsome way to suggest how Jesuitcampuses might solve the problem.If it takes a robustHutchins/University of Chicago solution, so be it.
