Upon waking from an apocalyptic dreamA careless FatherNow spends time withHis blackhaired SonIn the reeds along our trail.I carry the Virgin statueHeavy, arms hurtingMy legs sink into marsh and I shout the prayer to the lineBehind me.My dog begins to limpA bruise not a thornShe tells me: a slow bruiseOn all our hearts.We come uponThose monsters in theClearing and my heartShakesI show them the rust-covered statue wetAnd dewy our group picked it freshFrom the lilies of an italian yardThey ignore the group in a line theyTake me and I leave the VirginAnd I leave her sinkingI leave her face cast in sorrow unending inThe marshy mudSo doesEveryone, the lime, as they hurry ahead leavingBoth of us beforeI even leave her.So the monsters take me on furtherI jump from a tall waterfallInto that strange pool-a grave of dull swords.-Kimberly Campanello
