PanoramaBETTY ANN MILLSThe sights we saw ranged from vaststretches of beautifully colored desertsto lofty mountain peaks. As we drovealong, the houses became fewer andmore scattered. We noticed that theywere no longer large frame houses oreven small frame houses; they were ratherlittle and constructed of sun-dried mudbricks, or adobe, as the material wascalled. The appearance of these earthen-colored buildings was accompanied bythe disappearance of the trees and shr-ubs,The grass-covered plains, also, gave wayto a different landscape. Instead of therolling plains of pasture, vast, sand-cover_ed acres stretched out to meet the sky.The rose, pUrple, and blues of the sandmatched the sky-painting of the sun.After we passed through this color-washed region, the land began to changeagain. At first small foothills took shapein the distance. Then mountains toweredbeyond them. In the distance, upon thesides of the mountains, a gray haze hungaround the blue-green trees that coveredthe lower slopes of the mountains. Thismass of green foliage and wisps of graygauze clung in peace to the mountains,d ads circledand narrow, sharp-curve rothem. At one side of the road the, steepincline rose. From the other, a long fallawaited the venturesome traveler whoshould come too near the edge. Up thefirst side the trees climbed until they. hedcame to soil that no longer nounstheir luxuriant growth, and they becamefewer and turned to scrawny little shrubs.Below, the tall spikes reached up tospear the sky. The road twisted on andbegan its slow descent. Back throughthe beautiful trees it wound, up and downthe foothills, and out upon the plainsagain.(30)
