THE STUDENT'S PREPARATION FOR PEACEImpromptuJACK WALKERI consider myself very fortunate inhaving the opportunity to' attend collegeunder the circumstances that the war hasbrought about. I have always believed thateducation is the foundation of democracyand also that the college educated person isat an advantage in a democracy. When thewar is over, if all of the promises of ourleaders are kept, democracy will spread toall peoples, and the leaders, the educatedof this greatest of democracies, will becomeleaders of the world. Could it not easilyfall within their power to direct the build-ing of a post-war world of internationalharmony, into which war could never againforce itself?I believe that everyone should do hisduty for his country in this great struggle,but we must remember that the strugglewill not end when the fighting ends. Thecollege student of the present will be thesoldier of the second half of the struggle,the struggle of building a permanent peacein the post-war world. Certainly, everyperson who has the opportunity should stayin school and prepare himself for servicein the great army of reconstruction. Ashortage of manpower in that army wouldmean that those who fought and died inthe flrst struggle, fought and died in vain.THE COLLEGE GIRL'S WAR EFFORT /'Imp7'omptuMILDRED EVANSCollege girls in the past have been usedto three suitcases of clothes and a dateevery night with a civilian. Jane Co-ednow has an entirely new system of life andshe accepts it gladly. Jane is now cooperat-ing with a great event, war.Jane stands in the cold wind of amorning, waiting for a bus or streetcar, forfather only has an A stamp. It is still early,as Jane now gets up at six instead of theusual seven of last year. After school, shegets on a crowded stretecar and smilespolitely if someone steps on her toes.At night Jane Co-ed goes out with asoldier or sailor and really enjoys herself,even if he doesn't spend six dollars on theentertainment and food. Getting ready forher date, she doesn't ask herself which pairof shoes she is going to wear, or which dressbut puts on one of her few outfits with littleaccessories which she uses in making herclothes look new. After she is ready forher date, Jane walks in a two-inch snow tothe streetcar and jokes about her toelessshoes.The next morning Jane helps hermother with breakfast as her mother worksin a war plant. She then starts out foranother day with a smile on her face. JaneCo-ed is a symbol of all college girls inhelping the United Nations in this greatwar effort.(39)
