[Resumo] Neste artigo faise unha pequena glosa das orixes institucionais da educación
pública en Europa, que se sitúan na Alta Idade Media e chegan até os confíns da Idade
Moderna. Analízanse someramente esas orixes e complétase o traballo con un pequeno
estudo sobre o nacemento histórico das Universidades, sobre a Reforma e a Contrarreforma
e sobre o racionalismo de Descartes, o empirismo de Locke e a filosofía educativa de
Comenio, xa no século XVII.[Abstract] This article presents a brief overview of the institutional origins of public education
in Europe from the High Middle Ages to the Modern Era. There is a cursory analysis of these
origins and the article finishes with a small-scale study on the historical birth of the Universities,
an examination of the Reformation and Counterreformation, the rationalism of Descartes, the
empiricism of Locke, up to the educational philosophy of Comenio, in the 17th century
