Este artículo analiza el patrón productivo de la agricultura del Alentejo (Portugal) durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX (1850-1910). Apoyado en estimaciones del producto agrícola para la región, cuestiona la visión y explicación tradicionales sobre el modelo de "exclusivismo cultural" fundado en los cereales de secano. Se asignan también los principales factores que, en esta región latifundista, estimularán los cambios en el patrón productivo (especialización versus diversificación vegetal). En el comentario sobre los factores que, a finales del siglo XIX, promoverán una clara especialización cultural (trigo), se plantea el contraste. con las circunstancias que proporcionarán un patrón productivo similar en otras regiones de Europa del Sur y con las grandes agriculturas especializadas del mundo.This article analyses the pattern of agricultural production in the Alentejo (Portugal)
during the second half of the nineteenth century (1850-1910). Working from estimates
of the regional agricultural product the author question the traditional model of an
agricultural exclusivism based on cereal production. The principal factors which
stimulated changes in the pattern of agricultural production (specialization versus
diversification) in this “latifundium” region are identified, as are the factors which, at
the end of the nineteenth century produce a clear agricultural specialization (wheat).
Attention is drawn to the contrasting circumstances which produced a similar pattern of
production in other regions of southern Europe, and to contrast with the major
specialized agricultures of the world
