SHOW THE WORK: A CHALLENGE FOR WOMEN ARTISTS AND GALLERY OWNERS IN CONTEMPORARY ART HISTORY

Abstract

Este artículo analiza la presencia de las mujeres en las galerías de arte de Castellón como expositoras y galeristas durante los años de la dictadura. En este contexto, de las trece galerías que se crearon, tres de ellas fueron gestionadas por mujeres. En cuanto a su participación como expositoras aunque no es muy numerosa, es suficiente para mostrar su faceta artística. Los testimonios orales, la prensa y los catálogos de las exposiciones, nos muestran las circunstancias particulares que llevaron a estas mujeres a interesarse por el mundo artístico. Su realidad personal pone de manifiesto las limitaciones en esta época para dedicarse, no sólo profesionalmente a la creación plástica, sino también para formarse y mostrar su obra.This article analyses women’s presence in the art galleries of Castellón, both as exhibiting artists and as gallery owners or directors, during the years of the dictatorship. Although their presence was small, it was sufficient to reflect women’s artistic activity. In this context, of the thirteen galleries founded during those years, three were managed by women. Oral testimonies, the press and exhibition catalogues show the particular circumstances that led these women to become interested in the world of art. Their personal realities reflect the obstacles they faced not only to a professional career in artistic creation, but also in access to training and exhibiting their work
