Abbott(notexaminedby author).• CONTENT.No subspeciesarerecognized.• DEFINITION.A speciesof theauriculatusgroupof AntilleanEleutherodactyluscharacterizedby thecombinationof smallsize(malesto 19mm,femalesto 25 mmsnout-ventlength),dorsalpatternextremelyvariable(marbled,mediandorsalpale hair-line, evenasymmetricallyblotchedwithorange)butgroundcoloryellowish tan to tan, a darker postanal area that is not adistinct triangle(in contrastto E. audanti Cochranwhich ispartiallysympatric),andhindlimbsvaguelybandedwitha singlecrural band that is not outlinedwith pale (in contrastto E.audanti);tibia/snout-ventlengthratio(x 100)40.8-52.5in males,45.6-56.5in females;thedorsalpatternoftenincludesa scapularX attachedto a dark interocularbar; theventralsurfaceis im-maculateyellow,but theremaybe somevaguestipplingon thethroat.• DESCRIPTIONS.Aside from the originaldescription(Coch-ran, 1923),additionalinformationis availablein Cochran(1941:58-60),Mertens(1939:32-33),Lynn (1958:155),and Schwartz(1966).The last papergivesdetailedcomparisonsof E. abbottiandE. audanti, two specieslong confused.Goin (1959)gavecountsof maxillaryteeth.• ILLUSTRATIONS.Drawingsof dorsalpattern,side viewofhead,ventralviewsof handandfoot, andbuccalcavityare inCochran(1941);Schwartz(1966)has a drawingof the dorsalpattern.Mertens(1939)hasanexcellentdorsolateralphotographof a livingindividual.• DISTRIBUTION.Eleutherodactylusabbottiis widespreadonHispaniola.Schwartzand Thomas(1975:14)give the detaileddistributionasfollows:In Haiti, knownfromscatteredlocalitieson theTiburonPeninsulafromDame-Mariein theextremewestto Morne de Cayette,Kenscoff-Furcy,Seguin,Fond Verrettes,Thiotte, andForet desPins in theeast,in boththeMassif dela Hotte and Massif de la Selle and in the lowlands(Dame-Marie; Aquin);extremenorthernHaiti (Limbe;CitadelleLafer-riere: Marmelade;Anse a Margot;GrandeRivi~redu Nord);nearBurragede Peligre in centralHaiti; widelydistributedinthe Rep;'blicaDominicana,but apparentlyabsentin the xericnorthwest(MonteCristi Province)and mostof the southeast,where foundonly alongthe southernshoresof the Bahia deSamanii (Sabana de la Mar; Miches) and in the mountainsnorthwestof San Cristobal; an isolated occurrenceat theRio Cumayasa.La RomanaProvince; very abundantin allmountainsexcept the Cordillera Oriental in the RepublicaDominicana,evenoccurringin theSierraMartinGarciain Bara-honaandAzua provinces,but absentfrom thexeric Peninsulade Barahona.Altitudinaldistributionis fromsealevelat manylocalitiesto 5600feet(1700m; Furcy, MontagneNoire)and to6000feet(1830m)in theCordilleraCentralnorthandsoutheastof Constanza;in theSierradeBaorucoandMassifde la SelleinsouthwesternRepublicaDominicanafrom600feet(180m; 13.0mi. N Pedernales)to4800feet(1460m; El Aguacate).• FOSSILRECORD. None.• PERTINENTLITERATURE. Mertens(1939)gavea fewobser-vationson the ecologyof E. abbotti,notingthat it is eurytopicand thatthe frogswerefoundin deadleavesandcacaohusks,understones,and in a smallbrook.Schwartz(1966),althoughnot particularlyconcerneddirectlywith ecologicaldata, com-pared four diminutiveHispaniolanEleutherodactylus(abbotti,audanti,minutusNoble,haitianusBarbour)in colorandpattern,altitudinaldistribution,structure,andecologicalpreferences.• ETYMOLOGY. The speciesis namedfor W. L. Abbottwhocollectedfor theNationalMuseumof NaturalHistorybetween1883and1923.• REMARKS. E. abbottiis a mesophile.Widespreadin mesicsituations,primarilyforest(bothbroadleafandpine),the frogsshunxeric areassuch as the CuI de Sac-Vallede Neiba plainand the Peninsulade Barahona,as well as the northwesternxeric Valle de Cibao. The absenceof the speciesin extremeeasternHispaniolais unexplainedsincethis is basicallya mesicarea.The call is a long repetitiveseriesof "tuck's," followedbyor precededbya two-note"tuck-wheep,"thislatterdisyllablealso is ofteninterspersedrandomlywithin the seriesof singlenotes.ChorusesofE. abbottiareoftencomposedof hugenum-bersof males;callingmayoccur on rainy, cool, and overcastdaysaswell asduringthenight.Mertens(1939:33)renderedthecallas"click-click-click"andnotedthatit soundslike a delicatebird in its diminuendo.Calling sites are invariablyabovethegroundsurfaceon herbs and low shrubs, maximallyabout4feetfromthegroundsurface.COMMENTNationalScienceFoundationgrantstotheauthor(G-7977andB-023603)aidedin obtainingspecimensof E. abbottianddata.Qo!:!.Q50gQ75I§O Km.100Mi.MAP.
