Leber, AlbertSchwartz,andRichardThomason 1 August1963(examinedbyauthor).• CONTENT.No subspeciesarerecognized.• DEFINITION.A speciesof the inoptatusgroupof AntilleanEleutherodactyluscharacterizedby thecombinationof largesize(malesto 55 mmsnout-ventlength,femalesunknown),verylargedigitaldiscs,unicolordark brownandflat (ratherthanconcave)lores,stippledchin and throat,dorsalpatterna middorsalzoneenclosedbetweentwodorsolaterallines,setoffstronglyfrommuchdarkerlateralcoloration,andwithdorsalspotsmuchobscuredorabsent,posteriorfacesof thighsdarkcentrallyandwithpalever-miculationsorverticalbars(neverdots)laterally,a pairofchevron-likeantebrachialbars,supratympanicblackbarsoutlinedabovewithwhite,a moretruncateand lessoverhangingsnout,no externalvocalsacs,andhightibia/snout-ventlengthratio(55.7-61.3 inmales,femalesunknown).• DESCRIPTION.Theoriginaldescription(Schwartz,1965:498-502)givesdataon theholotypeandvariation,bothmensuralandchromatic,in theparatypicseries.• ILLUSTRATION.Schwartz(1965:498)gavea drawingof thedorsalviewof theholotype.• DISTRIBUTION.SchwartzandThomas(1975:25)gavethefol-lowingdetailed istribution:Hispaniola,includingtheTiburonPen-insulain HaitiandtheSierradeBaorucoin theRepublicaDomini-cana;in Haiti, knownfromtheMassifde la Hottenorthof LesCayesandCastillon;in theRepublicaDominicana,fromtheMassifde la Selle(2.6 mi S Los Arroyosand7 km N Cabezade Agua,PedernalesProvince),andtheeasternSierradeBaoruconearthetype-localityandLas Auyamas;a voicerecordfrom 25.5 km NCaboRojo,PedernalesProvince.Altitudinaldistributionrangesfrom2200to 3500feet(670to 1070meters).• FOSSILRECORD.None.• PERTINENTLITERATURE.Theoriginaldescriptioncontainsdataonvoice,callingsites,andvariationin bothmensuralandchromaticcharacters.Schwartz(1973)gavedistributionalndaltitudinaldata,andSchwartzandThomas(1975)summarizedall localityrecords.• REMARKS.Eleutherodactylushypostenorisoneof fivemem-bersoftheHispaniolaninoptatusgroupof Eleutherodactylus.Boththis speciesand E. ruthaeNoblecall from closedundergroundchambers,apparentlyoftheirownmanufacture.Thecallisasingle-notedrising"wherp,"repeatedas manyas threetimes,followedby an oftenextensiveperiodof silence.The habitatis usuallyde-ciduousforestor edges;uplandcafetalesin theSierradeBaorucoareideal,asthesearewellshadedandverymesic.SpecimensfrombetweenCabezadeAguaandLosArroyosweresecuredin woodedcafetalesandin an openandclearedareawithintheforestitself.Occasionalindividualsareencounteredontheopengroundin forestoronthelowerbranchesof shadetreesin cafetales.Theseindivid-ualshaveall provento bemales,butnonewasheardcallingfromthesesituations,despitesynchronouschorusesemanatingfromun-dergroundcavities.Specimensof Eleutherodactylushypostenorandnewdistri-butionaldatahavebeentakenunderNationalScienceFoundationgrantsG-7977andB-023603.• ETYMOLOGY.ThenamehypostenorisfromtheGreek"hypo"(under)and"steno"(togroan,moan,sigh),in allusionto theun-dergroundcallingsitesof thisfrog.LITERATURECITEDSchwartz,Albert. 1965.
