La depresión intramontañosa de Ronda se sitúa dentro de un patrón
estructural NE-SO en las zonas externas de las Béticas Occidentales. Datos
estructurales y geométricos recién adquiridos de su margen suroeste y de
las sierras adyacentes permiten indagar acerca de los principales controles
tectónicos en el desarrollo de la cuenca. Durante el Neógeno, dos eventos
de acortamiento NO-SE parcialmente coexistentes con un estiramiento NESO
parecen ser responsables de la generación de altos y depresiones estructurales.
El acortamiento se evidencia por dos sistemas de pliegues coaxiales,
principalmente registrados en las unidades Subbéticas y, un abanico
imbricado de vergencia NO (Unidades de los Flyschs). El estiramiento fue
acomodado por fallas normales NO-SE que parcialmente delimitan el límite
suroeste de la cuenca actual. La amplia distribución de estas fallas, junto
con su salto vertical, en algunos casos >1 km, ponen de manifiesto el importante
papel que desempeñaron en la configuración del basamento de la
cuencaThe intermontane Ronda Basin is located within the NE-SW trending
external zones of the Western Betics. Newly acquired geometric and kinematic
structural data from its southwestern margin and its neighbouring
mountain ranges allow to inquire about the main tectonic controls on the
basin development. During the Neogene, two events of NW-SE shortening
and partially coeval NE-SW stretching seem to be responsible for the generation
of along-strike structural highs and depressions. Shortening is evidenced
by two co-axial fold-systems, mainly recorded in the Subbetic units,
and a NW vergent imbricate stack (Flysch Units). Stretching was accommodated
by NW-SE trending normal faults that partially delineate the southwestern
current basin boundary. The wide distribution of these faults together
with their throw, rising at places >1 km, point to the important role
they played in the development of the basement basin architectur
