Mexico in the ‘60s and the irruption of the democratic and independent student movement in Michoacan

Abstract

En el presente artículo se analiza el contexto histórico en el que surgió el movimiento estudiantil en la Universidad Michoacana. Este movimiento, de carácter independiente y democrático, enfrentó las represiones gubernamentales ocurridas en los años 1963 y 1966 que pretendieron acabar con el proyecto de universidad democrática que se venía impulsando por estudiantes y maestros. Se reconstruye además, de forma general, el proceso de la resistencia estudiantil durante el periodo final del gobierno estatal de Agustín Arriaga Rivera, que no cesó de enfrentar y tratar de controlar la Universidad Michoacana. Y, por último, se plantean algunas conclusiones sobre la importancia que este movimiento estudiantil ha tenido para el desarrollo de la Universidad Nicolaita y la historia política del estado de MichoacánIn this article it is studied the historical context in which the student movement emerged, with an independent and democratic character, in the Michoacan University. It will be pointed out how it faced government crackdowns in the years 1963 and 1966 that sought to end the democratic project that was being motivated by university students and teachers. The process of student resistance is also reconstructed during the final period of the state government of Agustin Arriaga Rivera, an individual who never ceased to confront and attempt to control of Michoacan University. Finally, it is exposed some conclusions about the importance of this student movement that had on the development of Nicolaita University and the political history of the state of Michoaca
