The expansion of the religious orders at the Andalousian territories surrounding the Guadalquivir during the Seventeenth century_ The Discalced movement

Abstract

A lo largo de los siglos XVI y XVII, las órdenes religiosas masculinas protagonizaron una fuerte expansión en territorio andaluz, tal y como podemos observar en el elevado número de fundaciones que tuvieron lugar. Este fenómeno vino propiciado por el nacimiento y propagación de los mínimos de san Francisco de Paula, jesuitas y capuchinos, entre otros, así como de las nuevas ramas descalzas y recoletas surgidas en el seno de los franciscanos, carmelitas, trinitarios, mercedarios o agustinos, entre otros. Sin duda, la protección que otorgaron Felipe III y algunos nobles, entre ellos el duque de Lerma, a estos movimientos, fue determinante, aunque hubo otros que, por diversas razones, no consiguieron expandirse con tanto éxito.
