El consumo agregado en España: un análisis macroeconómico

Abstract

Aggregate Consumption in Spain : A Macroeconomic Analysis. According to the permanent income hypothesis, under rational expectations, the change in the consumption, between any two years can be expressed as the value of the innovations in the income times a multiplier. If the value of this multiplier is greater than one, then the standard deviation of the changes in consumption must be greater than the standard deviation of the changes in the innovations. When this does not happen, we are confronted with the Deaton's Paradox, and consumption is too smooth. In this paper we show that the behaviour of the aggregate consumption in Spain exhibits this kind of smoothness, and we look for some explanations of it.De acuerdo con la teoría de la renta permanente, bajo el supuesto de que los consumidores utilizan expectativas racionales, el cambio en el consumo entre dos años cualesquiera puede ser expresado como un múltiplo de las innovaciones en la renta. Si el valor de este multiplicador es superior a la unidad, entonces, la desviación estándar de los cambios en el consumo debe de ser superior a la desviación estándar de los cambios en las innovaciones de renta. Cuando ésto no sucede se dice que la serie temporal del consumo presenta un perfil excesivamente alisado, y constituye lo que se denomina la "paradoja de Deaton". En este artículo se expone que el comportamiento del consumo agregado en España presenta este tipo especial de alisamiento, y se examinan algunas causas posibles de tal evento
