An Internet of things resource for rehabilitation

Evolving from a mature body of research titledSoundScapes, this paper reports on a work-in-progress that isinvestigating the need that is evident for improved informationand recommendation infrastructures to assist in healthcareintervention and communication (including apparatus andmethod). The need is due to increased ICT use and the potentialsfor positive treatment outcomes from informed decision-making.A challenge is security of sensitive data, however detailing this isbeyond the scope of this paper. In line with this need, an evolvingcloud-based collaboration infrastructure resource is reportedwhere global networks of professional subscribers will haveincreasing access to specific profile data and recommendationstrategies. The focus on this phase of the work is to network thoseusing (or considering using) ICT in wellness/QOL, rehabilitationand habilitation. The resource is being built from real-world casestudies and is envisioned as a developing “feed-in feed-out” entitywhere evidence-based findings are submitted and extracted via asecured ‘gateway’ by expert professional practitioners. Theresource is considered an ‘Internet of Things’ model to alsoinform and consult families of people diagnosed withimpairments or patients undergoing treatment. Recommendedintervention apparatus include bespoke/custom systems as well ascommercially available systems. ‘In-action’ and ‘On-action’models for have emerged from the research. This means thattherapists adopting ICT into their work have a wealth of priorstudies to guide their choices of hardware, software andintervention method and analysis without having to wadethrough academic or scientific articles, papers and bookchapters. Through dissemination of the concept at this earlyphase of development in establishing the resource, an openinvitation for peers and related interested parties to critique,advise, and otherwise contribute toward optimal developmentand wide impact is offered
