The present report describes the fatigue behaviour of surface cracks in welded steel joints. Emphasis is laid on fracture mechanics modelling and the stochastic nature of the fatigue process. Various sources which may contribute to the observed scatter in time to crack initiation and time spent in the growth phase are highlighted
