It was born by an act of the united provinces of Upper and Lower Canada on April 14, 1842 under the directorship of William Logan, and has grown in size and in scope into an organization of international stature. Although research emphasis has shifted over the years, Quaternary studies have always been an integral part of this organization, but at no time have pure and applied research into Quaternary studies been perceived to be of greater importance than in the past decade. Quaternary studies within the Geological Survey have been traditionally involved with the systematic mapping of the surface deposits of the Canadian landmass and adjacent offshore realms, with the investigation of aspects pertaining to devel-opment of renewable and non-renewable resources, and with the recognition of hazards and environmental conditions affecting the safety of Canadians. In response to present concerns for the environment, new programs emphasize global change, paleoenvironmental syntheses, and contemporary geologic processes. This volume contains eight articles written by members of the Geological Survey, and represents the variety of on-going work in both marine and terrestrial Quaternary science. It includes papers ranging from broad regional landscape mapping projects covering all the Quaternary, through reconstructions of glacial histories and postglacial climates, to detailed studies of single sections reflecting environmental changes that occurred over the last few thousand years. The submitted manuscripts were critically read by scientists outside the Geological Survey. I would like to thank them for their time and efforts in reading papers contributed to this volume. DREDGE Terrain Sciences Division Geological Survey of Canada LE 150e ANNIVERSAIRE DE LA FONDATION DE LA COMMISSION GÉOLOGIQUE DU CANADA Le présent numéro spécial de Géographie physique et Quaternaire vient souligner le 150" anniversaire de la fondation de la Commission géologique du Canada. En effet, c'est le 14 avril 1842 qu'un acte des provinces unies du Haut et du Bas Canada en faisait la première institution scientifique du pays, sous la direction de William Logan. Depuis, la Commission s'est développée jusqu'à atteindre une envergure internationale. Au fil des ans, la recherche a porté sur des éléments divers, mais l'étude du Quaternaire est toujours restée une cons-tante. Cependant, avant la dernière décennie, jamais la recherche fondamentale et appliquée dans ce domaine n'avait pris autant d'importance. À la Commission géologique du Canada, l'étude du Quaternaire est depuis toujours associée à la cartographie systé-matique des dépôts de surface en territoire continental ou marin, à la recherche d'éléments relatifs à l'exploitation des 250 ressources, renouvelables ou non, et à la reconnaissance des conditions environnementales et des risques qu'elles présentent pour les citoyens. Pour répondre aux préoccupations actuelles en matière d'environnement, la Commission a élaboré de nouveaux programmes portant sur la synthèse des paléoenvironnements, les processus géologiques actuels et les changements climatiques qui se font sentir à l'échelle de la planète. Le présent numéro renferme huit articles rédigés par des membres de la Commission géologique et illustre la diversité des travaux qui y sont effectués dans le domaine du Quaternaire, tant en milieu terrestre qu'en milieu marin. Il traite de sujets qui vont des vastes projets de cartographie régionale couvrant tout le Quaternaire, à travers la reconstitution de l'histoire glaciaire et des climats postglaciaires, aux études détaillées de secteurs restreints reflétant les changements du milieu depuis quelques milliers d'années. Les articles ont été soumis à la lecture critique de scientifiques étrangers à la Commission géologique, que nous tenons ici à remercier. Lynda A.
