Quels sont les sens donnés à Manic-5 par les responsables politiques québécois et les dirigeants de l’Hydro-Québec ? Comment le praticien de l’histoire peut-il faire pour déterrer, tel un archéologue, les différentes couches de significations qui se sont accumulées avec le temps sur l’image du barrage ? Après avoir défini un cadre d’analyse conceptuel et méthodologique, le présent article propose une interprétation des significations données à Manic-5 pour trois périodes précises : les années 1962 à 1968, où le barrage devient rapidement l’emblème du Québec entrant dans la modernité ; les années 1971 à 1979, où Manic-5 se transforme en « lieu de mémoire » de la Révolution tranquille ; enfin, les années 1989 à aujourd’hui, où l’image de Manic-5 est récupérée dans les discours de l’Hydro-Québec afin de montrer les préoccupations environnementales de la compagnie publique et de l’État québécois.Stéphane Savard : When history gives meaning to symbolic representations : Hydro-Québec, Manic-5 and Québec societyWhat meaning is given to Manic-5 by Québec’s political leaders and the senior management of Hydro-Québec ? After having defined a conceptual and methodological analysis framework, this paper presents an interpretation of the meanings given to Manic-5 for three specific periods : 1962-1968, when the dam rapidly became the emblem of Québec’s entry into the modern world ; 1971 to 1979, when Manic-5 was transformed into a « commemoration site » for the Quiet Revolution and the symbol of a general consensus around the achievements of Québec society ; and finally 1989 to today, when the image of Manic-5 has been taken up in the discourse of Hydro-Québec to underline the environmental concerns of the publicly owned corporation and of the Québec government
