It was the subject matter of many linguistic investigations. Its structure, components and meanings have been studied. So there are a lot of approaches to the classification of word groups. In the report under consideration the attention is focused on the taxonomy of word groups according to the morphological expression of the adjunct. The traditional classifications subdivide phrases into noun-phrases, verb-phrases, adjective-phrases, adverb-phrases, pronoun-phrases and numeral-phrases. They depend on the way of the headword expression. It is of great importance, because the character of the headword determines semantic and syntactic relations between the components [2, p.54]. Another criterion for the word group classification is the number of its notional components. The majority of linguists distinguish simple and compound word groups. A simple word group consists of at least two notional words combined by the subordinate or coordinate connections. Sometimes they are called kernel ones. A compound word group is a combination comprising more than two notional elements. The conducted analysis of free word groups has shown that compound word groups cover numerous combinations of simple word groups with the adjunct of different types: Num+Adj (the first good action; two great writers), Adj+…+prep+N (a repetitive series of whistles), Adj+N (to lead a quiet life), Adv+Adj (a very nice day), Pron+N (the advice of his doctor), etc. The adjuncts carry the additional meaning in nomination of objects and phenomena.
