Oxygen is a highly reactive nonmetal, and an oxidizing element that readily forms oxides with most elements as well as with other compounds. Dioxygen (O2) distribution in the ocean depends on both biological and physical processes. Changes in either of these processes is susceptible to lead to changes in the O2 distribution. Oceanic deoxygenation (decline in O2 content) is under way and is one of the prices we are now paying for the fact that the ocean has been shielding us from the worst effects of climate change which would otherwise have resulted from the continuing excessive emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases
