THE NON OBSERVANCE MAXIMS IN THE CONVERSATION OF STEP UP ALL IN MOVIE (A Pragmatics Approach)

Abstract

This research aims to know the non-observance maxims that are used in the conversation of movie entitled “Step Up All In”. The main objective of the research is to know the kinds of non-observance maxims and the reasons of using them in Step Up All In movie. This research is based on the pragmatics study. It uses qualitative method. The researcher uses primary and secondary data. The primary data are utterances in Step Up All In movie. The secondary data are movie’s script, similar research, and movie review website. In this research, the researcher finds that there are 27 utterances which contain non-observance maxims. Those data were analyzed by using Grice’s theory. There are 22 utterances that are flouting the maxim, 4 utterances that are violating the maxim, and 1 utterance that is opting out the maxim. The types that occur in this movie are flouting, violating, and opting out. Infringing and suspending maxim type does not occur in this movie. However, the researcher only focuses on describing the context of conversation, categorizing, and explaining the non-observance maxims. Finally, the result shows that the situation, ignorance, external factors, or pressure which occur in the Step Up All In movie give the influences on their way in using non-observance maxims.
