A study on intellectual system for musical information processing

Abstract

Music analysis is important for correctly understanding music and its performance. It plays one of the most important roles in a musical information processing system. Musical structures are the fundamentals of computer performance. According to the Phrasing theory, several levels of structures like motif, phrase, and sentence compose a musical work. These occurrences are the basic components of the piece. Musical expressions are associated with these structures. In order to generate expressive performance, we need to analyze the musical structures first. The PSYCHE project pursues generating expressive musical renditions of classical music. PSYCHE has greatly concerned with musical structures. In order to obtain the musical information like musical structures, based on the general music theory, we\u27ve developed a system called DAPHNE, which is an integrated musical information processing system on both analysis and performance. DAPHNE obtains analysis information like musical structure and such information can be further used by other automatic performance generation systems to achieve abundant expressions. In DAPHNE, the following analyses can be performed: musical stuructures, relationships among occurrences of musical structures, structure functions (grouping by upbeat, accent, and desinence), tonality, harmony, and musical forms. Analysis can be done automatically or manually. Actual score images are used in the system to provide users a more realistic analysis environment. Based on analysis results, DAPHNE can visualize the performance data as graphs according to the musical structures. Different version scores are supported for comparing diversification and achieving a correct analysis.Thesis (Ph.
