A discussion  facilitated by Professor Diana Hassel will follow.  Brother Outsider illuminates the life and work of Bayard Rustin, who has been described as “the unknown hero” of the civil rights movement. A tireless crusader for justice, a disciple of Gandhi, a mentor to Martin Luther King Jr., and the architect of the legendary 1963 March on Washington, Rustin dared to live as an openly gay man during the fiercely homophobic 1940’s, 1950’s and 1960’s. This year, Roger Williams Law will be joining City Year Rhode Island and more that 400 local community and corporate volunteers to complete school improvement projects at Gilbert Stuart Middle School, paint murals at the West End Community Center, lead activities at the Elmwood Adult Day Healthcare Center and discuss Dr. King’s commitment to social justice at the Knight Memorial Public Library. Please indicate that you are part of the RWU Law group.TueSday,  January 18, 20104:00 p.m.   room 285 – Reception to FollowKeynote address by Michael evoraexecutive director, rhode island Commission for Human rights Title pending Michael Évora first joined the Rhode Island Commission for Human Rights as an Investigator in August 1988.  Later promoted to Senior Compliance Officer, he left the Commission in July 1990 to become a Syracuse University Graduate Fellow at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. Michael is a magna cum laude graduate of Dartmouth College, where he majored in English/Drama.  After receiving a Master’s Degree in Public Administration, Évora was hired as an Equal Opportunity Specialist at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity in Boston. He left HUD to attend Yale Law School in 1994.  Upon graduation from Yale, he served as Law Clerk to the Honorable Justice Victoria Lederberg on the Supreme Court of Rhode Island. Évora spent a year as an Assistant Public Defender for the Juvenile Division of the Public Defenders’ Office before returning to the Commission as Legal Counsel in 1999. Mr. Évora became Executive Director of the Commission in 2002, succeeding Gene L. Booth, who had served as the agency’s Executive Director for nearly 20 years.

This film brings to life the heroic post-World War II struggles of Mexican Americans against the Jim Crow-style discrimination targeted against them.  It highlights the landmark 1954 civil rights case Hernandez v. Texas in which a group of Latino lawyers sought to ensure that Mexican Americans were recognized by the 14th Amendment by bringing their case to the United States Supreme Court – and winning. CLORE promotes law reform scholarship, public education, and litigation in support of expanded civil rights, and focuses on issues impacting the Latino community in the United States. Prior to teaching, Professor Rivera was an Administrative Law Judge of the New York State Division of Human Rights, a member of the New York City Commission on Human Rights, and served as the Special Deputy Attorney General for Civil Rights for then New York State Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo. As Special Deputy Attorney General she assisted in the development and implementation of the Attorney General’s civil rights agenda, supervised the Civil Rights Bureau and organized and held statewide outreach sessions on civil rights issues. In 1993 Professor Rivera clerked for then District Judge Sonia Sotomayor. She also clerked in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals Pro Se Law Clerk’s office. She was a lawyer for the Legal Aid Society’s Homeless Family Rights Project, and served as an Associate Counsel for the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, where she worked on educa-tion and employment discrimination, equity and testing issues, gender equality and language rights discrimi-nation. On December 1, 2012, the State of New York Commission on Judicial Nomination named Professor Rivera as one of seven nominees to fill a seat on the State’s highest court, the New York Court of Appeals.For further information, please contact:

She clerked for the Honorable Sonia Sotomayor, on the Southern District of New York, and also clerked in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals Pro Se Law Clerk’s Office. She worked for the Legal Aid Society’s Homeless Family Rights Project, the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund (renamed Latino Justice PRLDEF), and was appointed by the New York State Attorney General as Special Deputy Attorney General for Civil Rights. Judge Rivera has been an Administrative Law Judge for the New York State Division for Human Rights, and served on the New York City Commission on Human Rights. Prior to her judicial appointment, she was a tenured faculty member of the City University of New York School of Law, where she founded and served as Director of the Law School’s Center on Latino and Latina Rights and Equality. On January 15, 2013, Governor Andrew M.
