MARYLAND CAREY LAW 2013 46IT is difficult to measure all the ways that one individual impacts the lives of others. But as I reflect on Dean Haddon’sannouncement that she will step down as Dean on June 30,2014 I find myself not only looking back to reflect on theways she changed and improved our law school, but I alsolook forward as we gear up for change by building on thoseimprovements. Leadership transition is a challenge for any institution. But for law schools today, it is particularly challenging. Meaningful change is underway in our professionwhich is having an impact on law schools across the country.During this transition, I know our Board of Visitors, ouralumni, and our faculty will step up and take responsibility to ensure a smooth transition. As chair of the Board of Visitors of the University of Maryland Carey School of Law, I have every confidence in ourlaw school’s future direction and continuity. Fostering strong| ALUMNIChristine A. In the year ahead, we will continue the law school’s importantmission towards a more just society by educating outstandinglawyers, advancing understanding of law and legal institutions,and enhancing access to justice for all. We’ll continue to solidifyand enhance the law school’s growing national reputation, as our faculty find ways to help our students with the challenges that face the future of the legal profession. Those challenges include making legal education more relevant and more affordablefor all students, a commitment that all in our law school focusupon. And we’ll need to hold close to those law school experiencesthat made us great lawyers, business people, judges, and leaders. We have already begun the process of considering a search committee, candidate qualifications, and priorities—all of whichwill be tailored to a vision of our values and our culture. We, asalumni, can make a difference in ensuring a successful leadershiptransition, and it is our responsibility to play an integral part in theprocess. It’s to our benefit too. In taking part, we can retain what is precious about our institution while being open to new,bold ideas; we can help minimize any impact the transition mighthave on students—our future, fellow alumni; and we can ensureour law school continues to thrive in ways that make us proud tobe graduates.There is much work left to be done during Dean Haddon’stenure, and more work to come as we search for the next dean ofour nationally recognized law school. In April2013, the Board approved the nomination of the incoming Student Bar AssociationPresident to serve as the student representa-tive to the Board with a term of one year.The student will have the same duties andresponsibilities as other Board members, and will serve on a selected committeewithin the Board.3L Doug Parvis, who is the 2013-2014SBA President, was surprised and honoredthat he would be the first student representa-tive on the Board. “It’s a big responsibility to represent not only myself, but the entire student bodyof the law school,” said Parvis recently in anemail. And even though he is barred fromparticipating in executive sessions of theBoard, he has already given the Board thebenefit of the student’s point of view inmany discussions.Board Chair Christine Edwards ’83, whoreceived the suggestion from longtime Boardmember Chief Judge Robert M.
