The article is devoted to the development perspectives of the probation service in relation to social expectations as to the reduction of crime by the state, as well as its criminal policy. The au- thor discusses the development of criminal policy as a legal science, as well as crime prevention practices. He also analyzes the results of various public opinion polls concerning the expecta- tions in regard to this policy. Such a context allows him to analyze the current state and func- tioning of probation service, also taking into account statistical data on its tasks and changes occurring in this respect. In the end, the author outlines the perspectives for the development of probation service resulting from his analyzes conducted in the article. He indicates a gradual loss of its probational character, as well as a weakening role and number of volunteers, which will strengthen its professional and social model. He also predicts that the current status quo of probation service will remain, given the not very strong social support for its more significant development.Artykuł poświęcony jest perspektywom rozwojowym kuratorskiej służby sądowej w ich odniesieniu do społecznych oczekiwań co do ograniczania przestępczości przez państwo, a także prowadzonej przez nie polityki kryminalnej. Autor omawia rozwój polityki kryminalnej jako nauki prawnej, a także praktyki przeciwdziałania przestępczości. Analizuje też wyniki różnych sondaży opinii publicznej co do oczekiwań w zakresie tej polityki. Taki kontekst pozwala mu na analizę obecnego stanu oraz funkcjonowania kurateli sądowej, uwzględniającą także statystyczne dane o wykonywanych przez nią zadaniach oraz zachodzących w tym zakresie zmianach. W zakończeniu autor zarysowuje, wynikające z jego analiz przeprowadzonych w artykule, perspektywy rozwoju kurateli sądowej. Wskazuje na stopniową utratę jej charakteru jako służby probacyjnej, a także słabnącą rolę i liczbę kuratorów społecznych, co umocni jej zawodowo-społeczny model. Prognozuje też utrzymanie się obecnego status quo co do stanu kurateli wobec niezbyt silnego społecznego wsparcia dla bardziej znaczącego jej rozwoju
