Study on the prevalence of white spots of the liver in pigs in Belgium and its relationship to management practices and anthelmintic treatment.

A survey was conducted on the prevalence of white spots of the liver in fattening pigs in Belgium. The study was supplemented with data on management practices and anthelmintic treatments of seven farms in order to identify the different factors which could possibly be influencing the high prevalence of Ascaris suum infections in Belgian swine, Of the 20,758 livers examined, a total of 7,401 livers (36%) showed one or more white spots. Large variations occurred between farms (0 to 100%) and also between sampling days for a particular farm. Of all the livers 17% were trimmed and 18% were condemned. On five farms (Z) hygienic conditions were considered to be moderate to bad and on two farms (L) they were considered to be good, Anthelmintics were used on all farms. Analysis of the pronounced difference in prevalence rates between the Z and L farms suggest that the most effective control measures may include housing conditions as well as hygienic measures unfavourable to A. suum transmission, rather than an uncritical reliance on the routine use of anthelmintics alone
