Steam cracking of hydrodeoxygenation of triglyceride based biomass (HDO-TGB) and HDO of tall oil fatty acids (HDO-TOFA) was studied on the Laboratory for Chemical Technology pilot plant to properly assess the potential of deoxygenated bio-oils. Compared to petroleum naphtha, the HDO-TGB contained high amounts of n-paraffins in a significantly higher carbon range. Only small amounts of naphthenes and no more than traces of aromatics were detected in the HDO-TGB. When cracking HDO-TOFA or HDO-TGB, ethylene yields were significantly higher compared to naphtha cracking. However, naphtha cracking resulted in high methane and propylene yields due to the higher amount of iso-paraffins in the feed. The HDO-TOFA also contained a small amount of FAME
