Elles emploient les mêmes média que la réclame publicitaire. La diffusion de l'information comme mise en forme ou « progrès » ethnocentrique devient essentiellement créatrice de désordres. Les arguments de Thornstein Veblen peuvent être mis en parallèles à ceux de Rousseau, contre le « progrès » dont ils pressentaient le développement (p. 43). Dans le tiers-monde, les interprétations et résonnances multiples des communications étrangères en provenance des cultures fortement industrialisées sont souvent inattendues. Les hommes d'affaires font souvent figure de « candides à l'étranger ». Telles sont quelques unes des lignes directives d'une pensée suivie d'évaluations sur le statut des intellectuels et de la culture en France par comparaison aux États-Unis, qui ne manqueront pas d'intéresser les éducateurs et les chercheurs. Mattelard jette une lumière troublante sur l'histoire du développement des postes, des télécommunications, et des arts populaires, qui intéressera les critiques « marxiste » et « déconstructive », et ceux qui cherchent la voie du « New Historicism ». Mattelard travaille dans la perspective de l'Europe du futur, unifiée ou de la CEE 1992. La richesse de La Communication-monde réside aussi en la démonstration des liens qui existent entre la genèse du cinéma et de la bande dessinée, l'information et la mode, le système ferroviaire et les cartes de pointage. Certains sous-titres rappellent les grandes fresques zoliennes : « Le cheval de fer », « L'organisme social », « L'argent comme média », mais si Mattelard insiste sur notre héritage « des idées et des stratégies » il n'en infère pas qu'un certain destin est inéluctable. Il insiste sur la diversité qui reste inhérente au problème de représentation et sur la difficulté de « jeter les bases d'une assemblée qui représentât tous Jes hommes », ce qui reviendrait « à vouloir déterminer le nombre exact des archétypes platoniciens » (302). Le livre contient en outre un appendice des points de repère chronologiques qui marquent le développement de la « communication-monde ». Un index détaillé permet aux lecteurs de retrouver les passages qui les concernent. — Servanne WOODWARD. NEWTON (Ken M.). Interpreting the Text : A Critical Introduction to the Theory and Practice of Literary Interpretation. Hemel Hempstead, Harvester, 1990 ; one vol. VIII-201 pp. Price : $ 16.00 paper. — Interpreting the Text tries to do two things at once and fails to achieve either. Aimed at a student audience, it wants to be read as an introductory survey of theories of interpretation ; but arguing a case for the centrality of interpretation to twentieth-century criticism, Newton's book also carries on the project of his earlier In Defence of Literary Interpretation (1986). Newton just does not manage to bring these two prongs of his « Critical Introduction » together. In addition, the book is often sidetracked into over- extensive summarizing and, at times, point-scoring that seriously break up the flow of either survey or argument. 750 KRONIEK These problems are immediately apparent fom the first chapter. Here what sets out as a discussion of the « foundation » laid by the New Critics « for the virtual identification of criticism with interpretation » (p. 16) quickly turns into an attempt to establish that New Critical theory in several respects « anticipates deconstructive analysis » (p. 37). Mainly in order to prove this not uninteresting side-issue, Newton is led further astray, quoting at length from Wellek's History of Modern Criticism to show how the latter' s criticism of Burke, Richards and Empson « is very reminiscent of contemporary attacks on Derrida and deconstruction » (p. 38) — The bearing of all this on the question of interpretation is far from clear. Similarly, the chapter on hermeneutics is more concerned to demonstrate that « apparently opposed forms of interpretation are... less irreconcilable than they seem » (p. 54) — to prove that all is well in the world of interpretation ? — than to help its intended « wide student audience » (p. 176) to an understanding of the various theories of literary interpretation. Thus there is no « fundamental difference between intenu'onalist criticism and either the New Critics or Gadamerian hermeneutics » (p. 54), a point which requires Newton to stretch the notion of intention unacceptably wide : « intentionality cannot be confined only to the author's conscious intention... as the author can be seen as the product of such supra-personal forces as culture, language, history, ideology, the unconscious » (p. 53). The chapter on structuralism, entitled « Against Interpretation », correctly states that « [s]tructuralists were not interested in the interpretation of particular works but in larger questions concerned with literature as a system or as a form of discourse » (p. 64). In his subsequent discussion of Marxist criticism, however, Newton does not pick up this thread ; here Fredric Jameson's effort to reconstruct the historical and ideological subtext that underlies all literary artifacts is presented as an ambitious and « totalising » form of interpretation (if there is one thing Jameson has always strenuously denied, incidentally, it is any totalizing dimension to his work) (p. 1 17). Newton is not, of course, wrong to associate Jameson's work with « interpretation » — a term Jameson himself uses. The problem is rather that here and elsewhere (e.g. in the chapter on poststructuralism) Interpreting the Text shows little concern for the student trying to come to grips with the precise meaning of the term interpretation and the development it undergoes in the course of critical history. The book concludes with an afterword that applauds the dynamic « pluralism... in literary interpretation.... [because] it promotes debate about the purpose and value of literary criticism and interpretation... » (p. 180). I am afraid this rather fuzzy book fails to contribute a serious voice to that debate and will not help prepare students to add theirs. — Gert BUELENS. Poétique. Paris, Le Seuil.
