Investigation of the effect of in-classroom preventive strategy use on problem behaviors and academic participation of students receiving inclusive education

Abstract

Yüksek Lisans TeziÖğrencilerde istendik yönde davranış değişimlerinin sağlanması eğitim sürecinin temel amacıdır. Eğitim süreci içerisinde ise öğrenciler sahip oldukları fiziksel, bilişsel, sosyal ve psikolojik pek çok farklılıktan dolayı her zaman istendik yönde davranışlar sergilemezler. Araştırmalar çeşitli sebeplerle okullarda öğrencilerin sergilediği problem davranışların arttığını, bu davranışların ise hem öğrencinin kendisi hem de çevresi için olumsuz etki yaratarak öğrenmeyi engellediğini göstermektedir. Öğrencilerin sergilediği problem davranışlar eğitim süreci içerisinde hem öğrenmeleri olumsuz etkilemekte hem de bireyin toplumsal uyumunu güçleştirebilmektedir. Problem davranışlar karşısında etkili olan uygulamaların problem davranış ortaya çıkmadan önce önlenmesini amaçlayan uygulamalar olduğu bildirilmektedir. Önleyici stratejiler olumlu davranış desteği yaklaşımında kullanılan, öğrencilerin problem davranışları henüz ortaya çıkmadan önlemeyi hedefleyen sınıf düzeyinde kullanılabilecek tekniklerdir. Bu araştırmada önleyici stratejilerin kaynaştırma eğitimi alan ve tipik gelişim gösteren öğrencilerin problem davranışları ve akademik katılım davranışları üzerindeki etkisi ile öğretmenlere verilen önleyici stratejiler eğitim programının öğretmenlerin önleyici sınıf yönetimi becerileri üzerindeki etkisini incelemek amaçlanmaktadır. Araştırmanın katılımcıları beş öğretmen ve dört öğrencidir. Öğretmenler aynı sınıfta derse giren farklı branş öğretmenlerinden oluşmaktadır. Öğrenciler ise 5. sınıf düzeyinde, kaynaştırma eğitimi alan üç öğrenci ve tipik gelişim gösteren bir öğrencidir. Araştırmada karma yöntem kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın nicel kısmında tek grup ön test son test zayıf deneysel desen; nitel kısmında ise durum araştırması yöntemleri kullanılmıştır. Araştırmaya katılan öğretmenlere önleyici stratejilerle ilgili eğitim verilmiştir. Araştırmada veri toplamak amacıyla öğretmenlere Önleyici Sınıf Yönetimi Gözlem Formu; Akademik Katılım Derecelendirme Ölçeği ve Problem Davranış Derecelendirme Ölçeği ön test ve son test olarak uygulanmıştır. Sosyal geçerlik verilerini toplamak amacıyla öğretmenlerle yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler yapılmış ve öğretmenlere Sosyal Geçerlik Anketi uygulanmıştır. Ölçeklere ait nicel veriler SPSS ve Excel kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Görüşmelerden elde edilen nitel veriler içerik analizi yapılarak analiz edilmiştir. Araştırmadan elde edilen bulgulara göre uygulanan eğitim programı sonrası öğretmenlerin önleyici sınıf yönetimi becerileri anlamlı düzeyde artmıştır. Önleyici stratejilerin sınıfta uygulanması ise kaynaştırma eğitimi alan ve tipik gelişim gösteren öğrencilerin problem davranışlarının azalması ve akademik katılımlarının artmasında kısmen etkili olmuştur. Öğrencilerden üçünün problem davranışlarında anlamlı düzeyde azalma görülürken bir öğrencide anlamlı bir değişim görülmemiştir. Benzer şekilde öğrencilerden üçünün akademik katılımlarında anlamlı düzeyde artış görülürken bir öğrencide anlamlı düzeyde değişim görülmemiştir. Sosyal geçerlik bulguları, öğretmenlerin araştırmayı amaç, süreç ve etkileri bakımından olumlu değerlendirdiklerini göstermektedir.The main purpose of the education process is to ensure desired behavioral changes in students. During the education process, students do not always exhibit desired behaviors due to their physical, cognitive, social and psychological differences. Research shows that problem behaviors exhibited by students in schools increase for various reasons, and these behaviors create negative effects on both the student and his/her environment, preventing learning. Problem behaviors exhibited by students negatively affect both learning during the education process and can make the individual's social adaptation difficult. It is reported that effective practices against problem behaviors are practices that aim to prevent problem behaviors before they occur. Preventive strategies are techniques that can be used at the class level, used in the positive behavior support approach, and aim to prevent problem behaviors of students before they occur. This study aims to examine the effect of preventive strategies on the problem behaviors and academic participation behaviors of students who receive inclusive education and show typical development, and the effect of the preventive strategies training program given to teachers on the preventive classroom management skills of teachers. The participants of the study are five teachers and four students. The teachers consist of different branch teachers who teach in the same class. The students are three students who are receiving inclusive education and one student with typical development at the 5th grade level. Mixed method was used in the research. In the quantitative part of the research, a single group pre-test post-test weak experimental design was used; in the qualitative part, case study research methods were used. The teachers who participated in the research were given training on preventive strategies. In order to collect data in the research, Preventive Classroom Management Observation Form; Academic Participation Rating Scale and Problem Behavior Rating Scale were applied to the teachers as pre-test and post-test. In order to collect social validity data, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the teachers and the Social Validity Questionnaire was applied to the teachers. Quantitative data belonging to the scales were analyzed using SPSS and Excel. The qualitative data obtained from the interviews were analyzed by content analysis. According to the findings obtained from the research, the preventive classroom management skills of the teachers increased significantly after the implemented training program. The application of preventive strategies in the classroom was partially effective in the decrease in the problem behaviors of the students who received inclusive education and showed typical development and in the increase in their academic participation. While a significant decrease was observed in the problem behaviors of three of the students, no significant change was observed in one student. Similarly, three of the students showed a significant increase in their academic participation, while one student did not show a significant change. Social validity findings show that teachers evaluated the research positively in terms of its purpose, process and effects
