Bhd (FPI) are currently involved in a joint research and developmentproject involving the utilization of effluent, biogas and biomass from the palm oil industryfor the production of new bioproducts. Another goal of this project is to reduce the emis-sion of greenhouse gases from the palm oil Industry in Malaysia, Incorporating the cleandevelopment mechanism (COM) under the Kyoto Protocol. A SOOtonpilot blogas fermen-tor was constructed, commissioned and currently in operation at FELDA palm oil mill in Serting Hilir,Negerl Sembllan.The research and development activities and projects carried out includesimproved biomethanation of palm 011 mill effluent for green and renew-able energy supply; production and recovery of organic acids for indus-trial use and for bioplastic production; and production of fermentablesugars from lignocellulosic residues by local microbes. The research pro-ject will also encompass the techno-economic study for the commercialproduction of the valuable products generated. POME TreatmentThe first phase of the project from 2002-2004, Involves afeasibility study and laboratory work, with a total fundingof RM700,000. The second phase from 2004-2006 in-volves pilot scale operations at the palm oil mill, with afunding of RM3 million.
