The most apparentcontamination cases are surface andground water contamination and soilpollution (Albaiges et al., 1986; Husainet al., 1987). Many studies showed thatthe composition of landfill leachatevaries and contain high concentrationof heavy metals and organic com-pounds.Materials and MethodsThe experiment was conducted to studythe effect of leachate production ondownstream river water quality statusat the closed landfill site (field study)and the effect of the landfill leachateon the growth of vegetable crop (Bras-sica chinensis) and iron concentrationin the leaf (pot study). The rehabilita-tion potential using fast growing forestspecies was studied in experimentalplot.Results and DiscussionWater quality studyThe results showed that the waterquality deteriorated significantly interms of chemical oxygen demand,ammoniacal-nitrogen, dissolved oxy-gen, biochemical oxygen demand andtotal dissolved solids. The deteriorationof water quality status was clearlyshowed by the water quality index,where the status changed from Class IIIto Class IV after passing through theclosed landfill site. The change in thestatus is mainly contributed by theleachate from the closed landfill site.Effect oflandfillieachate on vegeta-ble crop (B. chinensis)The application of landfill leachateincreased the dry matter yield of B.chinensis in the range of 59.2% to95.7% compared to control (treatmentwithout leachate). The accumulation ofiron in B. chinensis depends on thestage of growth and level of leachateapplication. B. chinensis treated withlandfill leachate has accumulated ironin the range of 22.5% to 38.4% higherthan the treatment without leachateduring the mature stage.Rehabilitation using fast growingforest speciesAcacia mangium was selected for reha-bilitation of closed landfill site. Theexperiment was carried out usingRCBD design. The trees were moni-tored in terms of growth (stem size andheight increment). As a control, thetrees were planted on non-landfill site.From preliminary results, it showedthatA. mangium can survive very welland has a potential to convert the de-graded land such as closed landfill siteinto productive land in terms of soft-wood production.ConclusionsThe contribution of pollutants fromlandfill leachate affect the river waterquality status significantly in the down-stream end. The study shows thatleachate can also be used as nutrientsupplement for the vegetable crops butat certain level it will enhance ironaccumulation in the leaf.Acacia mangium has a potential toconvert the degraded land (closed land-fill site) into productive land in termsof softwood production.Benefits from the studyThe study reveals that improper landfillmanagement is hazardous to environ-ment especially in terms of surfacewater quality degradation. The use ofleachate as in irrigation could causeiron accumulation in leafy vegetable.The study suggests that closed landfillsites can be tumed into productive landespecially for parks and softwoodplantation.Literature cited in the textAlbaiges,J., Casado,F. andVentura,F.1986.
