50 år med forskning og undervisning i petroleumsgeologi ved UiB

Abstract

Education of petroleum geologists from University of Bergen from 1972 and onwards coincidences in time with the early development of the Norwegian petroleum industry. The first producing oil field on the Norwegian Shelf, the Ekofisk Field, started ordinary production in 1972. The first scientific staff member in petroleum geology, Arthur Whiteman, was appointed the same year at Geological Institute, dep. A. During the five first years, the group increased to five staff members, partly due to governmental funding. Research was connected to the exploration of the Norwegian shelf, directly with data from wells and seismic, or indirectly through onshore field-analogue studies. The petroleum-geology education at University of Bergen has been a key factor in providing the Norwegian petroleum industry with expertise in demand. In this paper the main development of the 50-year history of research and education in petroleum geology at University of Bergen is summarized.publishedVersio
