The role of classical Sunnī theology in Islam and science:Responding to Nidhal Guessoum

Abstract

This article critically examines the current engagement between Islam and science, focusing on the role of theology in shaping this discourse. While previous efforts have centered on Islamizing science and aligning Qurʾānic verses with modern scientific knowledge, recent discussions have shifted towards methodological inquiries and specific theological issues. Nidhal Guessoum advocates for reinterpreting Islamic theology to align with modern scientific paradigms, suggesting that traditional frameworks are in tension with contemporary science. This article challenges that view, arguing that classical Sunnī theology, when rigorously applied, offers a no-conflict stance with modern science that does not require radical reinterpretation. By revisiting and carefully examining the metaphysical and hermeneutical foundations of Sunnī thought, we propose that many perceived conflicts between Islam and science stem from misunderstandings, and that classical Islamic theology holds untapped potential for constructive engagement with scientific developments while preserving the integrity of Islamic beliefs.</p
