The article outlines possible ways of reading of Józef Mackiewiczs works in the context of ecocritical and eco-aesthetic themes. The author discusses his views on nature starting with his juvenile interests in books about animals, to engagement in ecological issues present in reportages penned for the Polish journal “Słowo” (1922-1939). Bałżewska not only analyses Mackiewicz's sensual perception of nature and its functions in articles from the interwar period, but also refers to chosen aspects relating to nature in his novels published after 1945.
