Ports are not closed systemsand their pollution may impact adjacent coastal areas. Hydrocar-bon degraders and particularly the obligate hydrocarbonoclasticbacteria carry out a fundamental and global activity in biologicalremoval of hydrocarbons in marine habitats.This studywas carried out withinMAPMED, amultidisciplinaryproject aimed to improve the environmental sustainability oftourist ports in the Mediterranean Sea with regard to monitoringand reduction of hydrocarbon pollution.Three tourist ports were selected as case study sites: Cagliari(Italy), El Kantaoui (Tunisia), and Heraklion (Greece). The degra-dation potential of the autochthonous bacterial communities wasevaluated enumerating heterotrophs and hydrocarbon degradersby MPN in the surface seawater. Heterotrophs were signiﬁcantlymore abundant in seawater from Cagliari port as compared toEl Kantaoui and Heraklion ports. On the contrary, higher viabletitles of diesel- and phenanthrene-degraders were found in sea-water from El Kantaoui port compared to the other two areas.Hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria were isolated and characterizedregarding their phylogenetic position and catabolic abilities. Thehydrocarbon degradation activities were evaluated by GC-MS inaerobic batch reactors on diesel as carbon source. Samples of surface and anoxic sedimentswere collected at different stations.The dsrAB gene was chosen as genetic marker to speciﬁ-cally characterise sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB). It codes forthe dissimilatory sulphite reductase catalysing the last step inthe sulphate reduction pathway. Hydrocarbon degradation undersulphate-reducing conditions is an important process in marinesediments in anoxic environments. T-RFLP analysis of dsrAB genewas employed to elucidate the community structure of SRB.
