Abstract

Sentinel lymph node biopsy has revolutionized breast cancer treatment by offering a less invasive alternative to complete lymphadenectomy. This technique identifies the first lymph node that drains the tumor, minimizing morbidity by avoiding unnecessary removal of nodes. The introduction of neoadjuvant chemotherapy has added complexity but also improved the accuracy of sentinel lymph node biopsy. Technological innovations, such as advanced imaging techniques and molecular markers, have optimized the identification and evaluation of the sentinel lymph node. Recent studies show that sentinel lymph node biopsy is comparable to complete lymphadenectomy in terms of survival and recurrence, with additional benefits in patient quality of life. The future of the sentinel lymph node appears promising, with ongoing improvements in precision and minimally invasive technique
