Atherosclerose is een oorzaak van atriumfibrilleren. Dit proefschrift.  2.  Hartfalen is een bekende risicofactor voor atriumfibrilleren, echter atriumfibrilleren is ook een risicofactor voor hartfalen. Dit proefschrift.  3.  Atriumfibrilleren patiënten zijn cardiovasculaire overlevers, maar staan vervolgens bloot aan grote cardiovasculaire risico’s. Dit proefschrift.  4.  Het voorschrijven van coumarinepreparaten en plaatjesremmers bij atriumfibrilleren is slechts probleemloos mogelijk door gedachten aan het ‘primum non nocere’ begrip van Hippocrates uit te bannen. Dit proefschrift.  5.  Ondanks sterke verbeteringen in de behandeling van hart- en vaatziekten, is de prognose van patiënten met atriumfibrilleren de afgelopen decennia nauwelijks verbeterd. Dit proefschrift.  6.  De sterkste kant van personen of organisaties blijkt soms ook de zwakste te zijn, met grote schade tot gevolg. Het is voorstelbaar dat binnen de huisartsgeneeskunde het standaardenbeleid, de automatisering en de huisartsgeneeskundige hulp buiten kantooruren een dergelijk lot beschoren is.  7. De Nederlandse samenleving accepteert vrijwel probleemloos jaarlijks 900 doden en 20.000 ernstig gewonden, van wie 4.000 met hersenletsel, in het verkeer. Dit wijst op een ernstige stoornis in de oordeelsvorming.  8.  Wij zijn als mensen tot in het diepst van ons wezen verbonden met alle leven op aarde, met alle leven wat er ooit geweest is en wat na ons komt. Dit verplicht tot bescheidenheid, grote eerbied en zorg voor alles wat nu leeft en later zal leven.  9.  De probleemgeoriënteerde gezinsstatus is waarschijnlijk een van de meest geavanceerde producten ooit van het Nederlands Huisartsen Genootschap geweest. Het is schrijnend dat de verdere implementatie van dit product tot staan is gebracht door de automatisering in de huisartsenpraktijk.10.  De Friese uitdrukking ‘As dwaan net doocht is litten better’ geeft een beter houvast in de medische praktijk dan het Latijnse ‘in dubio abstine’.11.  Het is al langer bekend dat fietsers op het platteland van Noordoost-Friesland altijd tegenwind hebben, ongeacht de rijrichting. Het blijkt nu dat hetzelfde fenomeen zich voordoet op de Maasboulevard in Rotterdam.Rotterdam, 17 juni 2009
