Abstract

Si riportano alcune riflessioni emerse dalla lettura del trattato “The Theory and practice of landscape painting in water colours”, (London 1855) di George Barnard. Il trattato si compone di due parti distinte: la prima, relativa agli aspetti teorici, alla natura del colore e all’analisi dei materiali utilizzati per la pittura ad acqua del paesaggio urbano; la seconda, riguardante le applicazioni e gli aspetti pratici, illustrata anche attraverso grafici e diagrammi. Dopo aver collocato il trattato nell’ambito storico-culturale in cui è stato elaborato, l’attenzione è stata posta volutamente sulla prima parte del testo dedicata alla teoria e ai fondamenti della pittura del paesaggio ad acquarello.Abstract The paper offers a few reflections on reading The Theory and Practice of Landscape Painting in Water-Colours (London, 1855) by George Barnard. As the title implies, the treatise consists of two distinct parts: the first deals with the theoretical aspects, the nature of colour, and the materials used for landscape painting in watercolours, while the second covers applications and practical aspects, which are also illustrated through graphs and diagrams. After placing the treatise in its historical and cultural context, attention will focus on the first part of the book devoted to the theory and fundamentals of watercolour landscape painting
