Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) as former President of Indonesia conveys speech in
order to clarify the statement of Former Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK)
chairman, Antasari Azhar, that accuses him become masterminding of Nasrudin
Zulkarnaen’s murder. Moreover, Antasari’s statements also influence the vote and public
assumption about his son, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), who becomes candidate in
Jakarta Governor Election 2017. The purpose of this research are 1) to describe the speech
text used by SBY in order to clarify Antasari’s statement, 2) to find out interpersonal
meaning in the text in representing his ideology. This paper, based on Critical Discourse
Analysis theory (CDA) and Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) analyzes SBY’s speech
mainly from the point of transitivity and modality, in which we can learn how language
serves the ideology and power. The source of data is text of SBY’s speech in giving
clarification of Antasari Azhar’s statement published by Tribunnews.com in February 14,
2017. Content analysis is employed by investigating every clause in the text. The results of
this analysis show that 1) he uses more simple words and short sentences instead of difficult
ones, 2) from transitivity analyzes, SBY tries to convince citizen and make positive selfrepresentation.
Ideology reflected from SBY’s speech are 1) SBY’s strategy to maintain
his power, 2) SBY tries to save the vote and public assumption of AHY in Jakarta Governor
Election 2017
