Augmentation mammoplasty with silicone implants coated with polyurethane foam and with a nanotexturized surface: comparative analysis using the Brest-Q questionnaire

Abstract

Augmentation mammaplasty with implants is the second most common plastic surgery performed in Brazil and the most common in the United States. The present research is a retrospective study based on a review of medical records and, subsequently, on the occurrence of intervention through interviews and the application of a results satisfaction questionnaire, the BREAST-Q questionnaire, and a breast augmentation module applied after the first postoperative year. Fifty-four female patients who underwent augmentation mammaplasty with the inclusion of breast implants with a polyurethane and nanotextured surface were included. Objective: To evaluate the satisfaction and quality of life of patients undergoing augmentation mammaplasty with implants with a nanotextured and polyurethane surface. Method: A retrospective study was conducted with 54 women with hypomastia who underwent augmentation mammaplasty with polyurethane surface and nanotextured retroglandular implants. The participants were evaluated postoperatively with a Brazilian version of the BREAST-Q breast augmentation module regarding their quality of life and satisfaction with the outcome of the procedure. Results: In one analysis, the degree of satisfaction of two groups was compared according to each of the questions and for each questionnaire. Conclusions: The use of the BREAST-Q questionnaire as an evaluation tool allowed us to analyze the differences in patient perceptions between two groups of implants and produced reliable and reproducible results on the effectiveness of breast surgery. Overall, the results indicated greater satisfaction among the patients in the polyurethane group than those in the nanotextured group
