The master of buttoned sleeves – a significant representative of provincial baroque in northern Croatia

Abstract

Djelovanjem je prostorno i vremenski blizak majstoru Stjepanu Szeveru s kojim zajedno ostvaruje oltar Svete Obitelji u Majci Božjoj Koruškoj u Križevcima. Komparativna analiza zaokružuje opus od petnaest oltara i jedne propovjedaonice. The paper provides a reconstruction of the oeuvre of an unnamed provincial sculptor active throughout the second quarter of the 18th century in the area between Križevci and Podravina region around Koprivnica, all the way to Pitomača and its surrounding area. The master of buttoned sleeves, as I have named him for ease of reading and future research, is a representative of provincial Baroque with a significant (for now) attributed oeuvre, and he worked in a wide area that was a lively and demanding market during the period of greatest activity of provincial Baroque sculptors. His work is spatially and temporally close to that of the master Stjepan Szever, with whom he created the altar of the Holy Family in the Church of the Mother of God of Koruška in Križevci. The comparative analysis rounds off his oeuvre of fifteen altars and one pulpit
