The use of restorative materials and techniques to reproduce
the optical characteristics of teeth provides a more aesthetic
and natural restoration. The aim of this study was to review
the literature about the opale scence of composite resins in
comparison to the optical properties of the human tooth and
dental ceramics. For this purpose, a search was performed on
the Pubmed database, with the descriptors "tooth" and
"opalescence", and their respective "entry terms", without
language and year restriction. The search was complemented
by Google Scholar and the Scielo database. It was observed
that the methodology used in the research can influence the
results obtained, making it difficult to compare the studies.
Consider ing the space of colors L * a * b * or CIELAB, it is
verified that the parameter of opalescence of the materials
depends on the coordinates aR *, aT *, bR * and bT *, being
that the value of bT * is the most influence on results. In
addition to the direct materials, there are studies
demonstrating that dental ceramics have similar optical
properties to the natural tooth and that the composition of the
glass matrix and the finishing and polishing of the part
influence the final result. The opalescence is onl y one of the
characteristics that must be considered to achieve a final
esthetic result with excellence. It was concluded that the
restorative materials presented distinct opalescence to the
tooth. The clinical applicability of the opalescence parameter

proporciona uma restauração mais estética e natural. O
objetivo deste estudo foi realizar uma revisão de
literatura sobre a opalescência de resinas compostas em
comparação às propriedades ópticas do dent e humano e
de cerâmicas odontológicas. Para tanto realizou se uma
busca na base de dados Pubmed, com os descritores
"tooth" e "opalescence", e seus respectivos "entry
terms", sem restrição de língua e ano. Trabalhos foram
adicionados através da busca no Go ogle Acadêmico e
referências dos artigos selecionados . Observou se que a
metodologia utilizada nas pesquisas pode influenciar os
resultados obtidos, dificultando comparações entre os
estudos. Considerando o espaço de cores L* a* b* ou
CIELAB, verifica se q ue o parâmetro de opalescência dos
materiais depende das coordenadas a R *,a T *, b R * e b T *,
sendo que o valor de b T * é o que mais influencia nos
resultados. Além dos materiais diretos, estudos
demonstram que as cerâmicas odontológicas possuem
propriedades ópt icas semelhantes ao dente natural, que a
composição da matriz vítrea e o acabamento e polimento
da peça influenciam no resultado final. A opalescência é
só uma das características que deve ser considerada para
atingir um resultado estético final com excelê ncia.
Concluiu se que os materiais restauradores apresentam
opalescência distinta ao dente. A aplicabilidade clínica do
parâmetro de opalescência para seleção do material é
questionável
